About

Let me just start by answering some questions.

Who am I?

I am Stephanie Mitchell. I live in Oxford, Mississippi and I think, live and breathe dogs. I’ve always had an affinity for them and over the past 20 years or so I’ve rescued, fostered, rehomed or provided a comfortable, final place for over 200 animals. The more I help, the more I want to do. That’s what has led me here. The path to Drifters’ Place has been long, sometimes painful, and financially taxing. Yet it has definitely been the most rewarding part of my life.

What is Drifters’ Place?

Drifters’ Place is the dog rescue and training center that I am building in North Mississippi. The goal is to work closely with area shelters that have high kill rates, and transfer dogs that are labeled “unadoptable” from the shelters to Drifters’ Place. If we can get the shelters to cooperate in transferring dogs to us, we can make a big difference. These will be dogs that are listed on the shelters’ kill lists, so we save lives, as well as open up space for the shelter and assist them in lowering their kill rate. What we do then is take each dog, work on their nutrition, exercise, behavior and socialization. We foster and train them, helping each dog to become a truly remarkable companion and erase the “unadoptable” label forever. The goal is to work with every dog until it is ready to be adopted as a companion or helper dog, depending on its talents and skills. Those that come in as special needs and, after careful evaluation and fair training time, are deemed too unstable for the family environment, will remain as sanctuary dogs as long as they need to.

Will the dogs be kept in cages all the time?

Drifters’ Place is being planned and designed around training.  Part of the training process is socialization with other dogs and certainly with people. Keeping the dogs in a cage would only add to their stress and would potentially do more harm.

Drifters’ Place will have plenty of room for the dogs to exercise.  They should look forward to getting into their cozy kennels every evening for a long comfy snooze.

Why the name Drifters’ Place?

A good friend of mine has a wonderful Standard Poodle that she adopted from Carolina Poodle Rescue in South Carolina. He is the most handsome boy and is always smiling. Anyway, his name is Drifter and we decided to play off his name.

Drifter

DRIFTER

Most of the dogs that’ll be coming to the farm will just be drifting through, only staying long enough to get what they need before heading to their forever homes. We thought it was the perfect name and he would be our perfect mascot.

Do you euthanize dogs?

Euthanize? Yes.  Kill? No. Webster’s Dictionary states: “Euthanasia is the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy.”  So, if I have an animal, that no amount of care will make comfortable, I will most definitely have the dog euthanized in the most painless and peaceful way possible.  Will I kill dogs because I think I have too many, or because I think they have behavior problems or because they are old? Absolutely not!  Those dogs, the old dogs, the ones with behavior problems, the ones that need socializing, and the ones that have been deemed “unadoptable” are the driving forces behind Drifters’ Place. To help alleviate some of the overcrowding in shelters and to assist in finding homes for the dogs that local area shelters might be having trouble placing, we hope to work closely with shelters to remove dogs that are not getting adopted in hopes of saving them from the kill list. At Drifters’ Place we don’t believe in the “unadoptable dog.” That dog doesn’t exist. If we actively look for good homes, market the dogs as the blue ribbon companions they are, then we can find every one of them a home.

What is the mission of Drifters’ Place?

Our mission is simple.  To rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs.

Those are some basic questions to get things going. Now it’s your turn. Feel free to ask questions or post comments. After all, this is a blog.

Hi Stephanie, I am Bryan Cannon, the store manager of the new PetSmart store in Oxford. We recently received the Best Pet Supply Store award by the readers of the Oxford Eagle. As I thumbed through my copy of that issue, I came across your story. It is clear that you share my passion for animals, and dogs in particular. I wanted to reach out to you and let you know that I am here to help in any way I can. I don’t know how much you may know about us so I’ll tell you a little.

PetSmart Charities is the largest funder of animal welfare efforts in North America. Through their efforts they’ve helped to adopt out well over 4million animals. Since I moved to Oxford last October, I have teamed up with 9Lives Cat Rescue and we have adopted out literally dozens and dozens of cats since we opened in November. I formed a partnership with Panola County Humane Society in Batesville and they bring dogs at least once a month, almost always adopting 2 or 3 dogs out each time. I recently was able to secure the title sponsorship of their fundraiser Racing4Paws 5k run through PetSmart Charities. I have met with LeLe from Friends of Pete and just this week donated a big load of dog food to help her cause.

The biggest thing you should know is that we have an awesome venue for making adoptions happen. Every week we have on average 1200 customers that make a purchases, and I’m sure many more that may just come to look. 9Lives has cats in our adoption center 7 days a week, every day since we’ve been open. Our goal is to have an adoption group in the store every weekend day. We don’t charge a cent for the space, in fact PetSmart Charities makes a donation of $15 or more to the adoption group every time an adoption happens. The new pet parent receives a coupon booklet with tons of great offers including a free bag of Pro Plan dog or cat food, and special discounts on training or grooming services (as I can see, you know that behavioral issues are the single largest reason that animals get surrendered).

Please feel free to come by the store any time. I would love to find a way to help in any way. I think we could make a difference. Keep up the good work!

    Sincerely,
    Bryan Cannon

Hi Bryan! Thank you so much for contacting me! I can’t begin to tell you how much it means to us. You are actually very high on my list of people to talk to. I’ll contact you soon.

I really appreciate all that PetSmart Charities does for animals and animal rescue efforts. Without commitments from corporations like PetSmart, we would be so much farther behind. It goes without saying that the assistance you’ve brought to North Mississippi is much needed and much appreciated. PetSmart Charities’ efforts and your local contributions are an absolute godsend. Thank you!

I look forward to meeting with you.

Hi Stephanie, when I read the story your post this morning on yesbiscuit about the new shelter, I cant begin to tell you how happy that made me.!!

I have been following the MAS story for months and find it so difficult not being able to phyiscally help so far away in New Zealand, each day I read storiesof the many people trying to help. The Mayor and MAS management dont care how people feel about what they are doing to at MAS and it is clear to see they dont care about the animals.

Just wanted to say your amazing and I would be happy to support the shelter by monthly donations. Are you going to have your own printed clothing as well?

      Hello Annette,

Thank you so much for your kind words. I too have been following the MAS story very closely, and have written, emailed, called, etc. to get some kind of response. Still nothing. I refuse to spend anymore energy trying to change the minds of a bunch of people who’ve chosen to slam their doors in our faces. We can do something much more productive by getting animals before they reach the shelter. Once the facility is built, I will work extremely hard to take in animals that haven’t had a fighting chance. Thank you so much for your offer to support us! Tha means an awful lot. Drifters’ Place is a huge undertaking and I won’t be able to manage without commitments from wonderful people like you. I will have some t-shirts, car magnets and vinyls soon and will let you know when they are printed. Thank you again for your support and for caring.

I’m updating the blog site every day, adding new things and posting new information. Please keep visiting. Also, I hope you’ll spread the word with your friends and contacts.

      Will talk to you soon.

      Stephanie

    Dear Stephanie,
I just heard from your shelter yesterday from a colleague at Olemiss. I am already a volunteer at 9Lives Cat Rescue and I would love to help you out too. I never had dogs and don’t know much about them but I sure can learn from you. I work full time and have a child, but I can find a little time once a week to help you in any way you need.
Thanks for doing this wonderful humanitarian job that I dream of doing myself one day!

      Hi again,

I’m not sure but any page you’d like to print, you should be able to right click and pull up a menu. Print should be an option on that menu. If that doesn’t work, I’ll see if I can fix that. In the meantime, I’m emailing you the information for your daughter. Thank you!

      Hello,

First I want to apologize for taking so long getting back to you. Sometimes I don’t receive the notices letting me know someone has left a comment or message. I will make it a point to check more regularly.

I’m going to email a packet to you. It’s nothing fancy, but I give it to potential volunteers and it seems to help. If you need more information or your daughter wants to know more, please call any time at 662-816-5275 or email me at fightfordogs@gmail.com.

Thank you again for your interest in Drifters’ Place.

      Steph
